Moderation

Yesterday the California state legislature moved slightly forward with respect to a bill legalizing assisted suicide. But that's not the story.

(But I have to point out to Someone that it's no longer true that no one knows or cares about anything Oregon does. No doubt it's just because California has taken up the issue, but international newspapers now use the phrase "Netherlands and Oregon.")

The Chronicle mentions that a respectable poll showed 70% of the population supporting the bill; this is said to improve its chances.

It also notes that there is opposition to the bill within the Democratic Party (notoriously the home of Godless immorality). This opposition "signals that the measure may have a difficult time getting support from a broader bloc of moderate Democrats..."

And there you have it, folks. To be a moderate means to be prudently just on the edge of the 30%. If you stray too far, setting foot directly in the 70% majority, you are some kind of extremist.

Woot! International renown! (But can you, without cheating, tell me the current legal status of the marriages I attended in March?)

Well, what I seem to have read this morning is that a judge decided yesterday that they were not valid, while prudently avoiding any judgment on the matter of civil unions. But I'm not entirely sure whether this means the ones you attended, or not. Then again, the Chron isn't very international; I'll see if the international edition of the Guardian says anything, in a few weeks when it gets here.

You are correct, sir. I am now listed as a witness on (I think) two invalid marriage certificates belonging to people I don't actually know, which I suppose not many people can say.

The Oregonian, in its usual [strike]rectal-cranial inversion[/strike] sensitivity and propriety, compared the holders of those marriage licenses to the owners of souvenir "Dewey Defeats Truman" front pages.

(Katie is a little put out by this latest turn of events, as it means her parents are no longer married.)
